European Parliament Passes Motion on UN Resolution 2758

Published on IPAC GLOBAL

Today the European Parliament adopted a resolution on “People’s Republic of China’s misinterpretation of the UN resolution 2758 and its continuous military provocations around Taiwan” by an overwhelming 432 votes and with strong cross party support.

This motion was signed by 11 members of IPAC and initiated by, among others, IPAC EU Members with Engin Eroglu MEP, Michael Gahler MEP, Charlie Weimers MEP, and IPAC EU Co-Chairs Bernard Guetta MEP and Miriam Lexmann MEP in the lead.

The motion seeks to affirm the true intent and scope of UN Resolution 2758, which Beijing has been using to legitimise their claim of sovereignty over Taiwan. The motion also rejects Beijing’s distortion of UN Resolution 2758, and condemns the People’s Republic of China’s military provocations around Taiwan. The resolution is passed several days before the European Parliament Delegation, led by IPAC EU member Michael Gahler MEP, departs to Taiwan.

The parliamentary campaign forms a part of IPAC’s Initiative 2758 which was voted on by over 50 IPAC members in Taipei this July. IPAC EU Co-Chair Miriam Lexmann MEP was among them.

Australia was the first country in the network to pass such a motion led by cross-party Senators O’Neill (Labour) and Fawcett (Liberal) co-sponsoring a similar motion which received cross party support and passed unanimously with the approval of Foreign Minister Penny Wong. The Netherlands followed, passing a motion on Taiwan 147 votes to 3, led by IPAC Netherlands Co-Chair Jan Paternotte MP and with the support of 14 parties, including New Social Contract which currently holds the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the plenary debate on the motion, IPAC EU member Michael Gahler MEP said:

“Assembly resolution does not refer to Taiwan's status other than as a member state. Indeed, it cannot be a member state, but between full membership and nothing, a lot of meaningful participation must be possible.”

Following the vote, IPAC EU Co-Chair Bernard Guetta MEP said:

"The European Parliament gave a strong message that the European Union stands up for its partners and it does not leave alone those who fight for democracy in the world."
