In Central Asia, students advocate for human rights amid geopolitical tensions Central Asia, a region where the economic and geopolitical ambitions of global powers like China, Russia, Turkey, the European Union, the United States and India converge, includes the nations of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. This resource-rich area has gained renewed global attention following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This past summer, 15 students from the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences embarked on a journey to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, transforming the region into their classroom. Human Rights Experts Condemn Recruitment of Child Soldiers, Call for Global Action Rabat - Human rights advocates and experts gathered in Geneva on Monday to denounce the ongoing recruitment of children into armed conflicts worldwide, with a particular focus on the Tindouf camps in Algeria. The panel discussion, held on the sidelines of the Human Rights Council's 57th session, highlighted the grave violations of children's rights and the detrimental impact on peace and development. Abdelkader Filali, President of the International Research Centre for the Prevention of Child Soldiers, presented a new report detailing the experiences of children forced to join armed groups in conflict zones like Sudan and Yemen. Lebanon: Exploding Pagers Harmed Hezbollah, Civilians Thousands of pagers simultaneously exploded across Lebanon and parts of Syria on September 17, 2024, resulting in at least 12 deaths, including at least two children and two health workers, and at least 2,800 injuries, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health. Photographs and videos filmed by victims and witnesses to the incident and reviewed by Human Rights Watch showed pagers exploding in various locales, such as grocery stores. Other videos that appear to be linked to the incident show adults and children in emergency rooms with severe penetrating traumatic injuries to their heads, torsos. and limbs, and other injuries consistent with the detonation of high explosives. Islamist armed groups terrorize civilians in Burkina Faso-Human Rights Watch The Human Rights Watch group has warned about the ever-increasing cases of attacks on civilians by the Islamist armed groups in Burkina Faso. The rights group further said that the armed groups have massacred villagers, displaced people, and Christian worshipers. They claim the group has killed at least 128 civilians across Burkina Faso since February 2024 in attacks that violate international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes. The two main Islamic groups linked to Al-Qaeda, the Support of Islam and Muslims and the Islamic State control large swathes of land and have been fighting with the Burkina forces since they entered the country in 2016. BNM exposes human rights crisis in POB at Geneva conference The Baloch National Movement (BNM) has condemned the Pakistan Army’s human rights abuses in Pak-occupied Balochistan, branding the region as a “graveyard of hopes” rather than just a piece of land. This stark criticism was voiced during the fifth international Balochistan conference held in Geneva from September 16 to 18, 2024. Sammi Deen Baloch, General Secretary of BNM, addressed the conference via video link, highlighting the severe human rights violations perpetrated by Pak forces and intelligence agencies. Anna Olsson is weaving for freedom, hope and human rights When Anna Olsson learnt to weave “it was like stepping into an eternal love”, the artist tells us. A process that allows all of the pictures that flow through her head to come into their expression in a “calming” and deliberate way, her woven works often take weeks to craft. “Just the working hours itself does something to the expression” she says. “Everyone understands that there is a lot of work behind every weave and it strengthens what I want to say. Empowering Nepal’s Human Rights officers: Training on Fundamental Labour Rights The International Labour Organization (ILO) is excited to organize a transformative Training of Trainers (ToT) aimed at empowering officers of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal.
